Global Juice Industry Trends

The health, sustainability, premiumization, and flavor innovation are the most prominent trends on the global juice market.

As consumers become more informed of the negative health effects of sugar, they avoid not only beverages with added sugar, but also those with high content of natural fructose. To respond to that evolving consumer need, companies reduce the sugar level of their drinks by using vegetables and other ingredients in their products.

Celery, cucumber, beetroot, carrot, spinach, and kale are ideal candidates that provide vital micronutrients. To attract consumers to their new products, companies promote the health benefits associated with these vegetables.

Consumers also pay attention to the quality and origin of fruits and vegetables used in smoothies. Due to such demand, organic smoothies have become a fast-growing segment.

Among the more popular smoothies are charcoal smoothies with their detoxifying benefits, smoothies with superfoods such as chlorella, acai, and chia seeds, and smoothies with herbs and spices.

Orange Juice Market Size

In 2015, the global orange juice market was valued at 27.65 billion USD. The market grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.93% to reach 28.69 billion USD in 2019. Until 2025, the global orange juice market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 1.82% and reach 32.04 billion USD.

In 2019, North America and Europe accounted for 70% of the global orange juice market’s value with a 39% and 31% share, respectively. All other regions recorded a value share of less than 10%.

Asia Pacific recorded the third largest share of the orange juice industry’s value with 9%. Northeast Asia and took the fourth place in value terms with a 5% share. The Middle East, Africa, and the CIS countries accounted for 3%, 3%, and 2%, respectively.

Orange Juice Market Trends

Over the past few years, the orange juice market has experienced a gradual decrease in consumption in most developed economies. Some of the reasons include changing consumption occasions, concerns regarding sugar content, and the increase in substitutes.

Consumption occasions for juice have changed over the past few years. Previously, people regularly had a long breakfast together as a family and drank orange juice before going about their day.

Today, most people, especially younger consumers, forego this morning ritual in favor of their own unique ones. As a result, they often opt to eat on the go and seek out alternatives with less sugar or other characteristics.

Health conscious consumers are concerned about the sugar content of orange juice, which can contribute to obesity and diabetes. As a result, the hot drinks industry was positively affected, while orange juice’s popularity declined.

Despite that, orange is still the top flavour in most countries around the world. Furthermore, while Europe and North America recorded high per capita consumption, mostly the premium segment saw growth.

One of the reasons is because people drink less but better quality juice, for which they are willing to pay more. As a result, 100% fruit content juices have become more popular among consumers across the world.

The Middle East, Africa, and Asia, on the other hand, have been regions with much faster growth in orange juice consumption. The regions were partially driven by their expanding economies and growing middle class.

Pineapple Juice Market Size

In 2015, the global pineapple juice market was valued at 5.53 billion USD. The market grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 2.16% to reach 6.02 billion USD in 2019. Until 2025, the global pineapple juice market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 4.61% and reach 7.88 billion USD.

In 2019, Europe, Asia Pacific, and South and Central America accounted for 60% of the global pineapple juice market value. They held a 22%, 21%, and 17% share of the market’s value, respectively.

The three leading regions were followed by North America, Africa, and Northeast Asia with 14%, 11%, and 11%, respectively.

The Middle East and the CIS countries accounted for 4% and 1%, respectively.

In Europe, pineapple juice ranks among the top five flavors in many countries. Some countries include Spain, France, the UK, Malta, the Netherlands, Germany, and Cyprus.

At the same time, demand for organic pineapple juice also grew. However, because organic pineapple production is detrimental to sustainability efforts, producers focus on sustainable production, rather than organic.

Grape Juice Market Size

In 2015, the global grape juice market was valued at 4.53 billion USD. The market grew at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 0.51% to reach 4.62 billion USD in 2019. Until 2025, the global grape juice market is forecast to grow at a CAGR of 2.15% and reach 5.24 billion USD.

The North American and European markets’ value accounted for a majority of the market with a combined 56% (36% and 20%, respectively).

Asia Pacific ranked third and accounted for 14% of the global market value. South and Central America followed with a value share of 11%.

Northeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and the CIS countries registered shares of 9%, 5%, 4%, and 2%, respectively.

In the US, prices for grape juice increased in recent years. One of the main reasons is the intensified grape shortage. In fact, the US production of Concord grapes declined by about 20,000 tons in 2018.

Furthermore, as demand for grape juice has been relatively flat, grape farmers in the United States have expand into products beyond juice. For instance, Welch’s Global Ingredients Group entered into a winemaking collaboration with experts from Cornell University and the New York Wine & Grape Foundation in 2018.

After developing a proprietary technology that neutralizes the aroma and flavor of Concord grape juice, the company is now able to offer a lower-cost alternative to winemakers.

Juice Industry in Asia

Regionally, Asia experienced a robust performance in the last few years, driven by population growth, the growing middle class as well as by the continued development of modern retail channels. However, the region has also observed inconsistent development across countries and categories.

China accounted for the majority of the region’s volume growth, propelled by Chinese consumers’ interest in healthier and premium fruit juices. On the other hand, low-fruit content juices saw a decrease in consumption.

Despite growth of 100% fruit content juices, the overall juice category has been losing market share in China. Among the reasons is the strong development of flavored and coconut waters, positioned as a healthy, fresh, and premium alternative to juices.

At the same time, consumption of juice in India has increased, prompted by the good performance of mango juice.

In Japan, nutritious and high-value juices and smoothies have been especially popular in the last few years. However, in 2019, reconstituted 100% juices and nectars were the only categories, which posted positive growth in volume terms.

As in other countries, the health-awareness trend in Japan has boosted demand for smoothies, while the increasing consumption of reconstituted 100% juice was mainly driven by the growing demand for tomato juice.

Juice Industry in Europe

Europe was the largest consumption region over the last few years. However, it witnessed an overall decline in juice consumption. The only market segments with positive volume growth were from the Not From Concentrate (NFC) and chilled juice categories.

Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Poland were the leading markets in volume terms. Although Germany is the largest fruit juice market in Europe, it is heavily saturated. It is now far more difficult for market players to increase their customer base despite the frequent launch of new products and flavors.

Based on types, orange juice was the clear leader in Europe. It held a market share of 37% in 2019. It was followed by pineapple juice (6%), grapefruit juice (4%), and grape juice (4%) in the same year. All other juices accounted for 46% of the total market value.
